Professor Héctor Carrillo of the Department of Sociology and Gender & Sexuality Studies Program named a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow
April 12, 2020
Professor Héctor Carrillo of the Department of Sociology and Gender & Sexuality Studies Program was named a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow.
With the fellowship, Carrillo will explore the “sociology of genealogy.” He will study the sociotechnical aspects of amateur genealogy and the interactions of genealogists with the documents and records they access.
“I am truly happy and profoundly thankful to be selected for this prestigious fellowship,” said Carrillo. “The fact that I’m studying the sociotechnical aspects of amateur genealogy and the interactions of genealogists with the documents and records that they access seems especially significant right now. This is a time when reflecting on family, together and apart, and forging links with our forebears acquire relevance for many of us as we think about our past and present and imagine our futures.”
This year, the Foundation awarded 175 writers, scholars, artists, and scientists. 2020 Fellows are drawn from 53 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields, 78 different academic institutions, 31 states and the District of Columbia, and 2 Canadian provinces.
