Brian Odom, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been elected a 2020 Fellow of the American Physical Society for his research on novel optical control and cooing of quantum states of trapped molecular ions that will enable precision measurements with extremely narrow resonance lines.

With 55,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry, around the world, the American Physical Society is a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics through its outstanding research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities.

Annually, the American Physical Society recognizes members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the applications of physics to society and technology through their Fellowship Program.
