Professor Mary Pattillo, the Harold Washington Professor of Sociology and chair of the Department of African American Studies was recognized as a leading Black urbanist and pioneer by the American Planning Association in the piece “11 Black Urbanists Every Planner Should Know.” They chronicle historical figures and contemporary pioneers in urban planning and highlight Pattillo’s important works, Black Picket Fences: Privilege and Peril for the Black Middle Class and Black on the Block: The Politics of Race and Class in the City.
