Professor Patricia Marechal, of the Department of Classics and Department of Philosophy, has been awarded the Provost Faculty Grant for Research in Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts for her project.
“Labors Not Lost. Midwifes, Craftswomen, and Sages: Recovering the Voices of Women in Ancient Greco-Roman Philosophy and Medicine” was created by Marechal to highlight women’s contributions during the times of Ancient Greece and Rome. The Provost Grant awarded to Marechal is given to faculty to promote and support excellence in creative and scholarly work.
Marechal focuses on the psychology of Plato and Aristotle and in Classical Greek philosophy. She investigates Plato’s views on pleasure and Artistotle’s character states, among other aspects of their philosophical works. Additionally, Marechal has a particular interest in medicine during the Ancient times and how it was affected by the socially accepted societal views.
