From Argentina to Vietnam, as well as several countries in between, Northwestern students are helping communities worldwide during tumultuous times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Weinberg sophomore Kelly Bates took advantage of the virtual Global Engagement Studies Institute to intern with Fundación por Nuestros Niños in Salta, Argentina. This program advocates for children’s rights, focusing on violence prevention, health, and education.
In Pakistan, Northwestern junior Adan Ali assisted in launching the student-led Mask Banao campaign. This campaign works to share information about making masks at home while also promoting mask awareness and usage. Since starting the campaign Ali and his colleagues have seen Pakistani attitudes toward masks improve.
Another Weinberg sophomore, Bengi Rwabuhemba, has been involved with the virtual Global Engagement Studies Institute to intern with the Center for Initiatives Against Human Trafficking in Tamale, Ghana. This program works to empower women and children with a goal of educating the public about child labor and child marriages.
These students, as well as countless others, are doing important work in communities around the world.
