Professor Tobin J. Marks elected into the American Philosophical Society

Tobin J. Marks, Vladimir N. Ipatieff Professor of Catalytic Chemistry and Chemical and Biological Engineering, was recently elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society.

His research spans a wide variety of topics, including synthetic organo-f-element and early-transition metal organometallic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and materials chemistry. In 2005, he received the US National Medal of Science, the highest scientific honor of the United States Government, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Marks has also authored and co-authored numerous articles published in scientific journals.

Founded by Benjamin Franklin, the APS strives towards its goal of “promoting useful knowledge” by electing scholars, scientists, and professionals who make great strides in their respective fields. Additionally, the organization provides grants, fellowships, and many other programs to assist research efforts among its members. The APS currently has around 1,000 living members, and has elected 5,746 since 1743. Some of its foundational members include George Washington, John Adams, and Alexander Hamilton.
