Deborah Cohen’s “Last Call at the Hotel Imperial” named a Best Book of 2022 by New Yorker, NPR, BookPage and Booklist

Historian Deborah Cohen’s book Last Call at the Hotel Imperial has been chosen as one of the Best Books of 2022 by the New Yorker, NPR, BookPage, and Booklist. The book explores the lives of four journalists who reported from Europe and Asia during the lead-up to World War II. Cohen is the Richard W. Leopold Professor of History at Northwestern University.

Cohen’s book has already been well-received, with positive reviews from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Publishers’ Weekly, Kirkus, Booklist, Library Journal, and BookPage. Edith Chapin, NPR’s interim Senior Vice President for News, called the book “an insightful look at early pack journalism.”

“How a small group of midwesterners, along with their compatriots, became renowned journalists is a tale that must be read to be believed,” says Colleen Mondor of Booklist. “Cohen relishes each detail, uncovering moments of personal joy and calamity hidden behind the professional accolades and outrage…”

“Cohen’s book is a remarkable and exceptionally reader-friendly account of the lives of an extraordinary group of writers and people,” says Roger Bishop of BookPage.
