Linda Teplin, affiliated faculty in the department of sociology, has been selected as 2022 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest general scientific society in the world. Teplin is vice chair for research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the Owen L. Coon Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases at Feinberg School of Medicine.
For nearly 150 years, the AAAS has annually recognized members’ extraordinary achievements across disciplines. The 2022 class of AAAS Fellows includes 508 scientists, engineers, and innovators spanning 24 scientific disciplines, recognized for their scientifically or socially distinguished contributions to the advancement of science or its applications. An AAAS Fellowship is one of the most prestigious honors a scientist in the United States can receive.
Teplin is being recognized for distinguished contributions to public health policy, particularly landmark longitudinal studies that guide the redress of racial and ethnic disparities in incarceration and its consequences for mental and physical health. Teplin has led the Northwestern Juvenile Project, the first large-scale longitudinal study of health needs and psychiatric disorders in incarcerated females and males, examining both adults and juveniles, for the past four decades.
AAAS Fellows will be celebrated in Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2023.
