Yuchen Liu has received the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the foundation’s most prestigious honor for junior faculty members. “K-stability and moduli spaces of higher dimensional varieties” will bring exciting research and training activities in algebraic geometry to our department. Liu is assistant professor in the department of mathematics at Northwestern University and will receive $463,811 over five years from NSF’s Division of Mathematical Sciences.
The CAREER Award is designed to support promising young faculty members who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar through the combination of outstanding research and education. It underpins the NSF’s credence that research “is enhanced by inspired teaching, enthusiastic learning, and disseminating new knowledge.” The awards, presented annually, include a federal grant for research and education activities for five consecutive years.
Liu works in algebraic geometry and its connections to complex geometry and commutative algebra. His research focuses on Fano varieties, K-stability, moduli spaces and singularities. Liu was named a 2022 Alfred P. Sloan Fellow.
