Meet Simone Laszuk, who graduated from Northwestern in 2021 from the Environmental Policy and Culture (EPC) Program.
What inspired you to pursue study in the Environmental Policy and Culture (EPC) Program?
I have always been incredibly passionate about the environment. In high school, I was focused on the hard science aspects of that area of study (marine sciences, oceanography, environmental science, etc.). After exploring what that would look like as a career, I realized I wanted to transition more to strategy and policy. After looking through the classes and professors in the EPC department, I was really excited about the opportunity to learn more.
How did your studies in the EPC Program impact you personally and/or professionally?
The professors in the EPC program were all so helpful in highlighting what post-grad roles were. I first considered environmental law, and was able to take an environmental law class (which made me start studying for the LSAT) As I kept taking classes, I found I was really interested in corporate sustainability and the impact of the private sector, so I began talking to my professors about that. They all mentioned a new program at Northwestern (the MSES program associated with the ISEN department) which I ended up pursuing. It was a great suggestion— perfectly in line with my professional goals. On a personal level, I met some really incredible friends who were passionate about the same thing as me and they’re people I still keep in contact with today!
Is there a specific course, event, or memory associated with the EPC program that sticks out to you from your time at Northwestern?
The Environmental Justice class I took is something that has actually stuck with me since I took it. Not only was it an introduction and exploration of a really critical aspect of sustainability, but I don’t think I’ve ever been in a room with students and a professor who were so engaged in the subject matter. I learned so much in that class and recall conversations and debates we had to this day.
What are you working on right now that excites you the most or are there any accomplishments you would like to share?
In general, I love the work I do! I’ve gotten to work with companies of various sizes and maturities and industries to hell them quantify and report their ESG metrics. Last summer, I was promoted to Senior Consultant and I continue to grow and learn in my role!
What fun fact do you want to share with the Northwestern community?
A work fun fact: There are so many ways to get involved in ESG and between the SEC Climate Rule, CA Senate Bills, or ESRS, we’re seeing global movement and energy. This field is still growing!
A personal fun fact: I have two cats named Tuesday and Friday (which makes scheduling vet appointments very tricky)
How do you enjoy spending your free time?
Hiking and exploring the Bay Area with my fiancé, doing yoga, reading, exploring craft breweries and trying to find the best bar trivia, and hanging out with my two cats!
