Adilson Motter, the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Physics and Astronomy, was awarded the Senior Scientific Award from the Complex Systems Society (CSS).
Since 2004, CSS has worked to advance complex systems research pure and applied, advise scientists with issues regarding complex systems education and concern itself with the broader relations of complex systems to society, among many other things.
According to the organization, the Senior Scientific Award recognizes “contributions to the study of nonlinear dynamics in complex systems and networks, including synchronization, chaos, cascading failures, control, and applications to physical and biological systems.”
“The Senior Scientific Award is the most prestigious award given by CSS and is granted by the society to recognize society members who have advanced the field of complexity science by achieving truly exceptional scientific results.”
Professor Motter’s research is focused on the dynamical behavior of complex systems and networks. His research group uses a combination of tools from statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics, network theory, and data science to study a wide class of complex physical, biological, and engineered systems.
Professor Motter has also served as a member of the Science Board of the Santa Fe Institute, as Executive Committee Member and Advisory Committee Member of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems, as Executive Committee Member of the Northwestern Department of Physics and Astronomy, as Co-Chair of the NSF Workshop and Report on Multidisciplinary Complex Systems Research, and as Chair of the Awards Committee of the Network Science Society. He has served as Chair of the APS Topical Group on Statistical & Nonlinear Physics (GSNP) and Vice President and Secretary of the Network Science Society. He is currently the Director of the Integrated Science Program at Northwestern University, Faculty Advisor of the Northwestern’s SIAM Student Chapter, and President of the Network Science Society.
