Professor Seth Stein wins 2022 Walter H. Bucher Medal from the American Geophysical Union

"Seth Stein’s career includes research on a wide range of topics in seismology and geophysics. He works extensively with his wife, Carol, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago." - Northwestern Now

Seth Stein, geophysicist, and professor at Northwestern, recently received the 2022 Walter H. Bucher Medal from the American Geophysical Union. The award acknowledges significant achievements in the field of Earth science — specifically the crust and lithosphere.

Over his four-decade career, Stein has developed groundbreaking new research on plate tectonics and mentored students across the university with varying levels of expertise. Stein’s work provided information on how earthquakes form and creating preventative measures for locations under extreme risk. His other major contribution includes an exploration of the Earth’s lithosphere and how it evolves at plate boundaries and in plate interiors.

Professor Stein is the William Deering Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a faculty associate of Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research.

“I am honored and thrilled to receive this award,” Stein said. “Most of my life has been spent working with friends — both students and colleagues — to better understand how our planet works and how humans can better live with it.”
