Several members of the anthropology department and the program in global health studies, past and present, have contributed to a special issue of the American Journal of Human Biology on the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes 14 commentaries by leading scholars in the field.
Professor Thomas McDade and post-doc Amelia Sancilio have written the cover article titled “Beyond serosurveys: Human biology and the measurement of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.” Their paper highlights the remote “no-contact” approach to antibody testing that McDade and colleagues have developed to understand the factors that promote, and prevent, the spread of Coronavirus in the community.
In the opening editorial, Professor William Leonard, also editor of the journal, discusses why the field of human biology is uniquely positioned to address the pandemic and summarizes each of the 14 contributions in the special issue in “Human biologists confront the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Additional commentaries include “Promoting mental health in community and research settings during COVID-19: Perspectives and experiences from Soweto, South Africa” by Ph.D. student Andrew Kim; “Maternal and child health during the COVID-19 pandemic: Contributions in the field of human biology,” by Ph.D. graduate Zane Thayer; and “The COVID‐19 liquid gold rush: Critical perspectives of human milk and SARS‐CoV‐2 infection,” by Ph.D. graduate Elizabeth Quinn.
